In spring 2006 American Roots Music Education partnered with Metro Parks and Recreation with the goal of bringing communities together in an increasingly diverse area of the city. This partnership resulted in the first Música de la Gente – Music of the People Festival at Coleman Park Community Center.
The family-oriented festival was filled with colored lights, papel picado decorations, brightly colored tablecloths and piñatas, and over 1800 people. The event featured local Mexican-American bands and dance groups, children’s activities, food vendors and piñatas! The event became a tradition and continued in spring 2007 at Antioch Community Center.
With the re-opening of Coleman Park Community Center, the robust growth of the South Nashville population, and the performance by popular Mexican-American band Los Texmaniacs, ARME and Metro Parks expect this year’s festival to greatly surpass prior events, serving a larger and more diverse population than before!
